Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan® is considered the most comprehensive of yoga traditions, combining meditation, mantra, physical exercises and breathing techniques; it is a Raj Yoga, encompassing the eight limbs of yoga into a singular practice of excellence and ecstasy.

“Kundalini” literally means “the curl of the lock of hair of the beloved.”

This poetic metaphor alludes to the flow of energy and consciousness that exists within each of us, and enables us to merge with – or “yoke” – the universal Self. Fusing individual and universal consciousness creates a divine union, called “yoga.”

The Upanishads, dating back to the fifth century B.C., describe the Kundalini, although the oral tradition reaches back even further into history. For thousands of years, this sacred science and technology was veiled in secrecy, passed along verbally from master to chosen disciple.

Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan® is also known as the Yoga of Awareness; its focus is on self-awareness and delivering an experience of your highest consciousness. The technology of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan® is a science of the mind and body, to elevate the spirit, which has no boundaries, no discrimination. Therefore it is for everyone, universal and nondenominational.

  • What is Kundalini Yoga?

Kundalini Yoga is a holistic philosophy that brings practical benefits of rejuvenation and healing, brought to the west by Yogi Bhajan. It is a comprehensive system of exercises, breathing, meditation, chanting and a healthy mental projection. In this way we develop a conscious and dynamic relationship between our personal life energy and the universal flow of Prana. The overall result is the balancing of our chakras and the alignment of our ten spiritual Bodies. This awakens us to who we really are: Spiritual beings having a human experience.

  • The structure of a class

A Kundalini Yoga class is very simple and includes the chanting of a few mantras at the beginning and end of the session.
The standard format of the session is about 40 minutes of exercises incorporating breathing, 15 minutes of deep relaxation and some meditation.
Kundalini Yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan, is a comprehensive system and so some classes include discussions about life and spiritual philosophy.

This is a mantra to honour the Creation and tune into our inner guru. It brings the whole group to a common vibration as the class begins.

ONG – is used to express the universal vibration as it extends itself into the Creation.
NAMO – states that we have named the vibration and identify ourselves in relation to it.
GURU DEV – is the aspect of the transparent, invisible and all-pervading guiding impulse in every BODY.

This mantra develops the theme of the guru and declares the four stages of time through which the guru prevails; before the beginning, through the ages past, in the present and in the future.

This song is sung just before the end of the class and speaks for itself:

May the longtime sun shine upon you
    All love surround you
And the pure light within you
    Guide your way on

    This is the closing mantra.

This mantra means in the name of truth and confirms the integrity of the intention with which the yoga has been practised. It can also be understood as true name, or identity and is an appropriate mantra for practising silently during the class – hearing SAT while you inhale and NAM as you exhale.
SA TA NA MA is an expression of the journey home as the sleeping and serpentine consciousness is brought awake from its innate infinite connection (SA) through the life of form (TA) across the daily chasm of death (NA) and into an enduring birth (MA).

  • Enhancing your experience

Take a shower before, especially in the morning.
Wear loose cotton clothing (white recommended) & head covering for meditation.
Sit on something like a blanket, mat or sheepskin. Bring a shawl or blanket to cover yourself during relaxation and meditation.

We suggest a drug-free [coffee, alcohol, tobacco, …] and vegetarian diet.
Become conscious of the breath possibly linking it to a mantra
Prepare by inhaling white light & clear energy, exhaling toxins and tensions
Be aware of the hands – their position or movement – mudra
Eyes – imagine a helpful but simple image; circle and dot, candle flame, cross, etc.
Eyes – focus in and down to the root of the nose or third eye (between brows)
Thoughts – don’t attach, suppress, run from or otherwise make thoughts important, just allow them
Tongue – if not chanting press lightly to upper palate.

Be sure there is no medical reason why you should not do the yoga.
Do not eat for 2 to 3 hrs before – its OK to drink herb tea or water.
Elder people and those with high blood pressure are naturally advised to do all the exercises more slowly.
When menstruating women should not do inverted postures, double leg lifting, strong breathing or anything that puts a strain on the abdomen.
If you have any back problems let your teacher know and learn to adjust the exercises accordingly.

Mantras are an important aid to meditation, cleansing the subconscious mind and releasing new resources of consciousness. The rhythmic breathing and alternative thought form of the mantras serve to interrupt our usual patterns and create opportunities for the intuition to function and have more influence, bringing clarity to our lives.
Keep the spine straight and the chin in and back – straightening the neck
