No matter how much Yoga you do at home,
together it’s more:
Having a group of like-minded individuals to experience the flow and specific energy a Kundalini Yoga class generates, feels great and increases your energy quicker than practising alone might.
But there are more aspects why yoga in groups makes a difference.
Motivation and inspiration on your way to awareness
Kundalini Yoga makes you healthy, happy and holy.
As any road in life, the path can be steep, narrow and can appear sometimes as not very inviting. Having the company of some inspirational people around you will keep you moving forward.
Kundalini Yoga is called the Yoga of Awareness – and that does not stop after you left your mat. It includes shifts and transformations in your life, based on your growing consciousness regarding your thoughts, your word, your actions. Kundalini Yoga includes a turn to making patient and conscious decisions about your body and your life, and the environment you want to live it.
Undoubtedly, you come up against roadblocks. Sometimes we need the motivational stories provided in our yoga community, or some personal words of our teacher to help dig our way clear of the obstacles.
Practicing together is an example of the motivation your community can provide you with, because you know that everyone shares the commitment to move forward on the yogic way of union of body, mind and soul. Our fellow students, our teacher is like a lighthouse where we know that we cannot shipwreck, no matter the challenges we just face: Sangat (the yogic word for community) feeds our yogi souls and performs miracles in our minds, hearts, and souls.
Growth is Better in Groups
Growing internally like this requires the support of other like-minded folks striving towards a similar goal. Knowing that the person next to you is committed to walk the same path is supportive and inspiring. It can be a motivation in the vast ocean of self-initiation where once in a while we might feel a bit lost and alone. Coming together once or twice per week reminds you on your goal and on the tools available to you for reaching it.
Being in the community with a cup of tea after the class, all your questions, ideas and findings about Yoga can be shared and discussed, and you begin making connections with other students. Your yogic universe starts expanding, and so does your consciousness and awareness.
This is a process which cannot be performed alone: Only by sharing we discover all kinds of hidden pockets.
And the shining smiles surrounding you at the end of a class are simply priceless!
Inspiring to a personal discipline
Creating a personal and daily discipline in your practice takes time, energy and modesty.
Some changes to the good you will observe quickly, but to reap all of what yoga has to offer, you need to commit to it for the long haul. This is tremendously difficult in our busy lives if you do not have a community behind you. The sangat provides inspiration, motivation, and will sometimes also challenge you when you are about to lose your way and eventually remind you on the path of happiness you decided to walk: Even when we think we are alone, we are not.
